Exemplary Programs
Phillip C. Showell Elementary School was recognized by the State of Delaware among a top-tier of Delaware schools that are “Beating the Odds”. Academic programs are designed to challenge, motivate, and enhance student learning. ExCEL is an enrichment program offered in grades 4 and 5 that challenges gifted students to think critically and creatively. Access to technology is a priority for 21st century learning and PCS. Currently, in Grades 3 through 5, every student has 1:1 access to a Chrome Book. Pre-K to Grade1 students use iPad Minis daily to support instruction and Grade 2 works with laptops (Chrome Books in the near future). “Homework Club” provides homework tutoring and support each morning. Through a community partnership with the University of Delaware and 4-H, we offer a free K-5 Summer Camp and After-School Program. Positive Behavior Supports are implemented school-wide and monthly award assemblies celebrate both positive behaviors and academics.

Curriculum Highlights
Student success is best achieved when instruction is thoughtfully planned based upon in-depth data analysis, keeping each student’s individual needs in mind, and setting high expectations for all. Instruction is aligned to the Delaware Standards using the Learning Focused Strategies approach. Our Language Arts curriculum, Benchmark Advance, is designed to prepare all students for college and career readiness in the 21st century. Using complex informational and literary texts, it engages students in collaborative conversations and writing about the texts, and integrates science and social studies concepts. Materials are used in both a print and digital/online format. Bridges in Mathematics addresses the math standards by focusing on a deep understanding of concepts, proficiency with key skills, and the ability to solve new and complex problems. Student progress is continually monitored using multiple sources of data and action plans are put in place to meet each student’s needs.
