Exemplary Programs
The Shields Elementary School staff continues to implement exemplary programs which meet students' needs in a variety of areas resulting in a well-rounded curriculum. In addition to outstanding instruction in the core subject areas, efforts are made to address positive reinforcement through PBS (Positive Behavior Supports), academic enrichment, technology in the classroom, grouping configurations, and integration of regular and special needs students. HOSTS reading program uses community volunteers to support reading instruction. Parent volunteers are welcomed and are present in the classrooms. Furthermore, our school unites parents and teachers to challenge our students with Odyssey of the Mind. In order to further challenge our highly abled learners, students are exposed to Science Technology Engineering and Math (STEM) kits. We have also implemented the Cape Accelerated Program (CAP) to challenge students in 3-5th grades.

Curriculum Highlights
Shields uses a Balanced Literacy Approach for language arts, Investigations for Math instruction, and the Smithsonian kits for Science instruction. The staff will use Learning Focused Strategies (Thompson, 2008) for lesson planning and implementation. Shields has placed 21st Century technology in all classes including state of the art computers, Smart Boards, and document cameras. Integration of curriculum and technology is necessary when providing and quality education for our students. Furthermore, a full-time Reading Specialist and Math Specialist provide direct services to students on both ends of the achievement spectrum allowing all students to be successful at Shields Elementary School. A Cape Accelerated Program (CAP) teacher was also added this year to support our highly-abled learners.
