Exemplary Programs
Smyrna Middle School has many programs to assist students in meeting high standards and offers a variety of exposures for students leading into their pathway of choice at Smyrna High School and beyond. In addition to diverse elective programs, unique programs are offered to provide reinforcement and enrichment. Our Agri-science, FCCLA and Business Communications programs are among the best in the state. SMS art students have received regional and state awards for their creativity and design. Digital Storytelling, Math in Technology, and STEM allow students to thrive in creativity while providing support in the core academic content areas. The STEM program continues to utilize the Project Lead the Way curriculum, recognized as a challenging, yet creative way of offering science, technology, engineering, and mathematics in the classroom, one of only a few middle schools in the state of Delaware.

Curriculum Highlights
Our district-wide initiative, "Learning Focused", has been integrated into all subject areas to provide our students with necessary critical thinking skills. Staff have developed learning maps, essential questions, activating strategies, and graphic organizers to enhance student learning. Smyrna Middle School is heavily involved in the Next Generation of "Learning Focused". With block scheduling, all students will have the opportunity to continue their writing and reading enhancements through the core content areas and extra time devoted to students who may need the extra assistance. The Common Core State Standards has been a priority for our school and the preparation for the Smarter Balanced state assessment has teachers developing new strategies and methods of instruction. The district wide growth mindset will be embraced to tackle the ever-changing dynamics of education and through a reimaging grant writing in ELA and Social Studies will be a focus.
