Exemplary Programs
North Smyrna Elementary School’s highly qualified staff works to meet the diverse academic, social, and emotional needs of our early childhood through fourth grade students. The Delaware state certified Star 5 early childhood program provides services for three and four year old special education students, as well as their typical peers. Title 1 Reading and Math, as well as gifted services are available. The Comprehensive Learning Program services students’ district wide that require more academic support, specialized services, and assisted technology. Spanish Immersion is offered in kindergarten and first grade, providing students with their curriculum in Spanish for half of the day. The art, music and choral programs allow for creative expression, while the physical education program guarantees that students are active. Our Smyrna Pride, positive behavior program, ensures that positive behaviors are acknowledged and anti-bullying strategies are in effect.

Curriculum Highlights
The curriculum at North Smyrna Elementary is aligned with the Common Core Curriculum State Standards. Staff uses a Learning Focused influence when presenting material to students, with essential questions, key concepts and standards based vocabulary. McGraw Hill Wonders and Bridges in Mathematics are the Common Core aligned curriculum used to drive instruction. NSE also offers supplemental learning supports through innovative and technology-driven programs such as System 44. Teachers, Specialists, and Administrators meet each week in Professional Learning Communities to continue to modify and shape existing curriculum in addition to making decisions based upon student data. Additionally, the staff reflects on strategies and works on developing differentiated learning opportunities for student mastery to increase students’ success rate in the classroom.
