Curriculum Highlights
DSD follows an American Sign Language (ASL)-English bilingual program. Research-based, best practices are utilized with an emphasis on developing and maintaining balanced proficiency in both languages. Students develop their social and academic language skills in flexible, data-driven groupings. Instruction is tailored to students’ individual needs for receptive/expressive ASL, reading/writing English text, and, when appropriate, receptive/ expressive Spoken English. Teachers follow Common Core State Standards in English Language Arts and Mathematics, Next Generation Science Standards, and Delaware State Standards for Social Studies and all elective classes. DSD integrates experiential, project-based learning approaches with Science, Technology, Engineering, Arts, & Mathematics (STEAM) to create dynamic learning opportunities for students to develop their critical thinking, collaboration, communication, and creativity to become 21st Century learners and contributing citizens.
