Exemplary Programs
Student progress at George Read is performance-based, aligned with Common Core State Standards, and showcased through work samples. Math, Science, Social Studies, and Reading/Language Arts activities reinforce particular topics and units that are developed by instructional teams, using the district-mandated curriculum. A variety of activities are implemented, including flexible grouping for specific needs, cooperative tasks, and performance-based assignments. Computational skills, problem-solving strategies, and the reading/writing process are incorporated into all subjects to reinforce academic and life-long learning and to prepare students for the Smarter Assessment/DCAS state exams. Teachers also strive to teach and use basic research skills, primary resources, the Internet, interviews, and graphic organization of data so that our students develop critical and comparative thinking skills.

Curriculum Highlights
George Read strives to provide each student an exemplary educational program that will prepare them for high school and beyond. The teachers have adopted the Learning Focused Solutions model of classroom instruction. Therefore, every student is challenged using higher-order thinking strategies on a daily basis. Teachers analyze student data to drive instruction and to meet the specific learning needs of the students. Teachers utilize a variety of instructional strategies to address the diverse learning styles and abilities of the students. In addition, every student has the opportunity to participate in a daily enrichment program to receive extra academic support or extended activities. During this time students receive small group instruction or use computer based programs. The Exploratory Arts staff supports the vision of academic success by incorporating Reading, Writing, and Mathematics into their lessons.
