Exemplary Programs
Through Colonial School District's Middle School Redesign, Gunning Bedford is now a Visual and Performing Arts-themed school. Students at GBMS may display their talents in this area through a variety of exploratory classes and clubs including: Band, Chorus, Keyboard and Guitar Class, Visual Arts, Digital Media, Graphic Design, and Drama Club. With each of these classes and clubs, students are provided the opportunity to showcase their talents through multiple performances or public events. Our core academic areas are supported by extracurricular opportunities, such as our Science Olympiad Club, STEM Club, Math 24, Student Council, Business Professionals of America, Yearbook Committee, and Newspaper Committee. An Academic Enrichment period also provides academic intervention and remediation to our students through programs such as Read 180, Compass Learning, and Dreambox or extension for our more advanced students through programs such as Springboard and Middlebury Foreign Language.

Curriculum Highlights
The curriculum at Gunning Bedford is rigorous, performance-based, and aligned with Common Core State Standards and the Next Generation Standards in an effort to help all of our students become College and Career Ready. Math, Science, Social Studies, and Language Arts activities reinforce particular topics and units that are developed by instructional teams, aligned to the CCSS and the District-mandated curriculum. Differentiated instructional strategies are used by staff to engage all learners. Computational skills, problem-solving strategies, and the reading/writing process are incorporated into all subjects to reinforce academic and life-long learning. Teachers include real-life scenarios to promote active participation and meaningful transfer of learning from the school to the community. They also strive to teach and use basic research skills, primary resources, the Internet, and graphic organization of data so that our students develop critical and comparative thinking skills.
