Exemplary Programs
Jennie Smith Elementary School partners with the community through several programs: Girls on the Run is a physical activity program based on positive youth development. Jennie Smith’s Girls On The Run team learns life skills though dynamic, interactive lessons and running games. The program culminates in a 5k running event. Our special education students participate in the Delaware Special Olympics soccer and basketball events, thus giving students an opportunity to develop physical fitness and demonstrate courage regardless of their abilities. Jennie Smith also participates in the National PTA’s Reflection Program for the Arts that encourages the arts in school and home for all children. Teams from Jennie Smith participate in the Lego Robotics, Science Olympiad and Meaningful Economics competitions.

Curriculum Highlights
Jennie Smith’s focus is on instruction driven by the Common Core Standards. Reading instruction is inclusive of whole group, small group and literacy centers. The math block facilitates whole group, small group, centers and the Dream Box computer program. The writing program “Explorations in Non-Fiction Writing” is directly aligned with ELA. Jennie Smith in partnership with the Delaware Science Coalition utilizes Smithsonian Science Kits. The Advanced Academic Program focuses on implementing lessons in critical and creative thinking for all students. All of our programs encourage problem solving skills and higher order thinking through problem based learning, questioning and answering evidence based questions.
