Exemplary Programs
Downes has received the Academic Excellence Award annually since school ratings began. Some exemplary programs at Downes include our Chinese World Language Immersion Program, an initiative of Governor Markell; the Shakin' Sharks Steel Band; the K-Kids Community Service Club; Meaningful Economics; Lego League, after school Music and Science Clubs; and the CATCH Homework club sponsored by the Newark Rotary. Our Positive Behavior Support program includes a PBS store and Shark of the Month Lunches to recognize students who meet academic expectations and the expectations of being Honest, Respectful, and Responsible each month. We have Lunch Bunches for extra help in academics, as well as Mentoring. Since a healthy body leads to a healthy mind, we have a partnership with Nemours to advocate health and wellness. We use movement throughout the day, and students tend our own garden. We 'shark’ercise every morning and have a walking program called TREK, as well as a Walk/Bike to School program.

Curriculum Highlights
Our mission at Downes is to support and challenge our students every day. Students and teachers set goals, and we use small group instruction to meet student needs. Students collaborate with each other to solve problems and complete many types of tasks. We use hands-on instruction and differentiate instruction for our students. Our gifted and talented teacher supports teachers in all grades to provide challenge. Everyday, all of our students should feel that some activities are challenging, while others are just right. As with all Delaware schools, we support the Common Core State Standards. Our teachers meet weekly in Professional Learning Communities to examine student data, plan lessons and create action plans to help all of our students reach their fullest potential. Some of our curriculum highlights include Math and Literacy Nights, Multi-Cultural Night, Numbers Bee, Meaningful Economics, Science Fair, Family Healthy Heart Night, Music Concerts, Barn Dances and Lego League.
