The Mission of the McKean High School Community is to inspire life-long learners and to cultivate contributing members of the modern global society. We have one simple vision statement for our students: "Jobs Today and Careers Tomorrow!" McKean is a comprehensive 9-12 high school with a focus on both college & careers using personalized learning opportunities for all students. Students are offered a strong academic program including 17 Advanced Placement, 4 Dual-Enrollment course offerings, and 10 state of the art Career and Technical Education Programs. We are racially balanced with approximately 30% African-American, Caucasian, and Hispanic. We pride ourselves in supporting our students with disabilities and English Language Learners, celebrating our diversity across many levels. McKean has been recognized over the past several years for its focus on community service projects and our award-winning career programs: Jefferson Award Finalists and Superstars in Education Winners.

Curriculum Highlights
McKean’s unique facilities support a wide variety of Career and Technical Education programs to ensure our students’ college and career readiness. Here are some of our updated career facilities: Culinary Arts (commercial grade kitchen/café), Early Childhood Education (Preschool serving 3-4 year olds), Teacher Academy (for teaching above preschool age), Radio and Television Broadcasting (currently airing EDTV - Comcast and Verizon educational programming for Wilmington-Area, currently airing The EDGE 88.1 FM Radio Station), Plant Science (Greenhouse), Animal Science (Barn), , Environmental Science, Automotive Technology (fully operational repair shop), Manufacturing Engineering and Technology (CAD lab and space for design construction), Marketing (iMac Lab with Adobe certifications available). Fine arts are well represented through the study of 2D and 3D visual arts, and a variety of vocal and instrumental music programs, including McKean's Award-Winning Choirs and Drumline.
