Exemplary Programs
Baltz has adopted a student centered scheduling philosophy much like a middle school. Grades 4 and 5 have teachers specialize in a core subject and the students travel to different classrooms for that specific subject. Other grade levels have adjusted class sizes to target specific groups of learners. The second grade switches reading classes to focus the instruction to the students. Baltz continues to utilize the Positive Behavior Support model to reinforce appropriate behavior. We offer supplemental instruction in both reading and math. A comprehensive music program is in place that includes Band, Strings and Chorus. Artwork decorates the hallways. Various levels of special education services are available. Our students also have the opportunity to participate in many service projects such as: Holiday Food Drive, Jump Rope for Heart, & Baltz Buddies. We encourage our students to reach out to those less fortunate. We believe a well-rounded education extends beyond the classroom.

Curriculum Highlights
During the 2008-09 school year, Baltz piloted the SingaPore Math Program. Using the Singapore model, teachers focus on automaticity in Math facts, Concepts and Calculations. Students use picture models to figure out equations and word problems. The curriculum is predicated on learning a basic concept, using the concept and then incorporating the concept throughout different activities. During the year, teachers have received professional development opportunities to fine tune their teaching and better understand the curriculum, while matching the Singapore program to the Delaware curriculum.

Baltz Elementary School has implemented RTI, Response to Intervention, as a school-wide initiative. All students receive a 30 minute per day reading intervention block. These smaller class settings look at student performance to shape the daily lessons. With the smaller class sizes, teachers are able to work more closely with the students to increase their learning.
