Exemplary Programs
Sussex Academy uses the expeditionary learning concept and the International Baccalaureate Diploma Program as its instructional framework. The expeditionary model used through grade 10 emphasizes learning by doing with a particular focus on character growth, teamwork and literacy. The school is structured around five core practices: learning expeditions, active pedagogy, structures, character and culture, and leadership and improvement. The practices are reflected in learning experiences, which are project-based and student-centered. All middle school students keep portfolios, complete community service and assessment is ongoing.

The International Baccalaureate Diploma Program focuses on global ideas across disciplines. Sussex Academy became an official International Baccalaureate Diploma School in March 2015. All 11th and 12th grade students are currently enrolled in IB classes. Sussex Academy maintains a strong commitment to wellness and school culture.

Curriculum Highlights
In middle school students take five core courses (reading, writing, mathematics, science and social studies) that are grounded in the state content and common core standards. In addition, they take “Exploratories” throughout the year. Literacy is the instructional focus of the middle school grades.

The high school curriculum is grounded in common core and content standards. The curriculum reflects the rigor of the International Baccalaureate Program with IB preparatory courses in grades 9 and 10 and IB courses for students in grades 11 and 12.

All students are expected to perform community service during the school year. In grades 11 and 12, the students participate in a self-designed CAS project that demonstrates their creativity, action, and service.

Extra curricular activities include middle school, junior varsity and varsity sports, intramurals, band, chorus, theater, and school clubs and organizations.
